Georgetown University Celebrates Groundbreaking Ceremony for Thompson Athletic Center

Friday, September 12th, 2014

Bowie Gridley Architects is pleased to announce the groundbreaking for the new John Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletics Center. This new 136,000 square-foot, three-story facility is named for the legendary Hoyas men’s basketball coach, who led Georgetown to its first NCAA basketball championship in 1984.

The new athletic facility was designed as the training facility for the men’s and women’s basketball, soccer and lacrosse programs (NCAA Division I, Big East Conference). Bowie Gridley partnered with Populous to create a state-of-the-art training facility for the University’s signature athletic programs. Social and academic support centers were designed for the school’s scholar-athletes to promote interaction outside the traditional classroom environment and to strengthen the sense of community among athletes.

The John Thompson Jr. Athletics Center will be directly connected to the existing McDonough Gym via a linear glass “link” and was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. Bowie Gridley worked with the Old Georgetown Board (OGB) through the zoning approvals process for this new facility on an historic campus.
